How I Arrived at the Hobby Score

This card received a 80.5 overall Hobby Score.

The 1990 Topps Frank Thomas #414 Rookie Card is one of the most recognizable cards of the junk wax era. Issued during a time of massive overproduction, the standard version is still popular among collectors due to Thomas’s Hall of Fame career. However, the card's biggest intrigue comes from the famous error version — the “No Name on Front” (NNOF) variant, where Topps accidentally omitted his name from the card’s front entirely. That printing mistake has become one of the most sought-after and valuable error cards in modern baseball history.

While the regular edition is readily available in high grades, and thus earns a moderate hobby score due to abundance, the existence of that rare NNOF version adds lasting lore to this release. Frank Thomas would go on to be a two-time AL MVP, the face of the White Sox throughout the 1990s, and one of the most feared right-handed hitters of his generation.
