The case
Why this card matters.
The 1985 Topps John Elway #238 is Elway's second-year card, released as he was settling in as the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos. Known for his strong arm and athleticism, Elway was already showing flashes of the talent that would define his long NFL career. He was also drafted by the New York Yankees, but chose football, quickly becoming one of the league's most watched young quarterbacks.
Topps was the only company producing licensed NFL cards in 1985, and the set is recognized for its black borders, which are prone to chipping and make high-grade examples harder to find. This card reflects Elway's early years in the league, before his Super Bowl wins, and is collected by those interested in the full arc of his Hall of Fame career.
