The case
Why this card matters.
The 1996 Fleer Metal Kobe Bryant #181 rookie card belongs to one of the most visually aggressive basketball products of the 1990s. Fleer Metal used etched-foil backgrounds, industrial textures, and comic-book-style design elements rather than traditional court photography layouts. The set reflected Fleer’s effort to separate Metal from its standard Fleer and Ultra brands, giving the product a distinct identity during a period when manufacturers were experimenting heavily with premium finishes and themed card construction. Bryant earned his first NBA All-Defensive First Team selection in 1999-00, the same season the Lakers won the first title of their three-peat. He eventually finished with twelve All-Defensive selections, tied for the most in NBA history at the time of his retirement.
