The 1996 Topps Chrome Kobe Bryant #138 rookie card comes from the inaugural Topps Chrome Basketball release, introducing chromium technology to Topps' flagship basketball brand. The 220-card set mirrored the standard Topps checklist but replaced traditional cardboard with a reflective chrome finish that produced sharper colors and increased surface gloss. Refractor parallels also made their basketball debut in the product, establishing a format that would become one of the hobby's most influential parallel programs. Kobe Bryant entered the NBA directly from Lower Merion High School after earning National High School Player of the Year honors in 1996. Selected 13th overall by the Charlotte Hornets, he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers before playing his first NBA game, beginning a 20-season career with a single franchise.
