The 1996 Topps Kobe Bryant #138 rookie card is the paper flagship counterpart to the more technically ambitious Topps Chrome release. The base Topps set used traditional card stock and a simpler production format, making it the broader, more accessible version of the same rookie-year image. Bryant appears in the main checklist from one of the strongest NBA rookie classes of the 1990s, alongside Allen Iverson, Ray Allen, Steve Nash, and other long-term stars. At Lower Merion High School in Pennsylvania, Bryant averaged 30.8 points, 12 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 4.0 steals as a senior. He finished his prep career as one of the most decorated high school players in the country before entering the 1996 NBA Draft directly from high school.
