The 1997 Metal Universe Tim Duncan #66 rookie card was produced by Fleer/SkyBox as part of one of the most experimental basketball sets of the 1990s. Metal Universe replaced conventional court backgrounds with illustrated fantasy environments, using foil-heavy surfaces and comic-inspired artwork to create a distinct visual identity. The release also included Precious Metal Gems parallels, which later became one of the most studied parallel structures in modern basketball cards. Duncan became the foundation of the Spurs’ long-running defensive identity. He finished his career with 3,020 blocked shots, ranking among the top shot blockers in NBA history, while also anchoring teams known more for positioning and discipline than gambling for steals.
