The case
Why this card matters.
The 1997 Ultra Tim Duncan #131 rookie card was issued by Fleer during the final years of Ultra’s run as a glossy, photography-driven basketball brand. The set used foil name treatment, full-color action images, and a cleaner premium layout than Fleer’s standard base release. Ultra also included Gold Medallion parallels, continuing the 1990s movement toward parallel versions that changed the surface treatment without creating a separate insert checklist. Tim Duncan entered the NBA after four seasons at Wake Forest, an unusual path for a No. 1 overall pick during an era when elite prospects were increasingly leaving college early. He finished his senior year as the consensus national college player of the year before San Antonio selected him first overall in 1997.
